Governor Lemanu is seeking Fono approval of a lease extension and amendment for StarKist Samoa of three lots at the Industrial Park in Tafuna.
The original lease was for 30 years ending September 30, 2022 and it contained a clause for a 25 year extension.
The Governor said that StarKist Samoa has requested an extension through to September 30, 2047.
The three lots combined covers about 3.71 acres.
Under the existing lease the cannery is paying an annual lease rate of $72,828 or $6,069 per month,
Under the new lease the payment has been increased to $113,274 per year or $9,439 per month.
New language added to the proposed lease is that the cannery may house containers on the premises for no more than 14 days. Normal policy is for containers to be stored on the premises for five business days.
It’s not known if the lease extension will be discussed during the special session of the Fono now underway.
