Led by Prudence Sekgodiso’s stunning performance in the 800m event, Team SA enjoyed a host of successful performances during day 5 of the World Athletics Championships in Budapest.
Prudence Sekgodiso smoothly secured her spot in the women’s 800m semifinals, clinching second place in her heat during Wednesday morning’s race.
After experiencing elimination during the semifinals in the previous showcase held in Eugene last year, Sekgodiso rebounded impressively. She recorded a time of 1 minute 59.72 seconds, following closely behind Keely Hodgkinson from Britain. Hodgkinson, renowned as the European champion and a silver medalist at the world championship, finished with a time of 1 minute 59.53 seconds.

Pole vaulter Kyle Rademeyer narrowly missed out on qualification, finishing 15th with 5.7m. To qualify, the athletes need to jump at least 5.8m or finish within the top 12 competitors.
In the women’s Javelin Throw event, Jo-Ane van Dyk finished 10th with a throw of 60.09m to guarantee her qualification.
Long jumper Cheswill Johnson failed to progress past the qualification stage, finishing 26th with a jump of 7.61m.
There was great success among the South African 200m trio of Luxolo Adams, Sinesipho Dambile and Shaun Maswanganyi, who all progressed past the heat stage of the men’s 200m event. Adams clocked a season best of 20.15, Dambili ran a 20.34 and Maswanganyi finished with 20.56.
